Expat Teachers: What’s the Best Retirement Business for You?

After all, you don’t want to wake up five years from now dreading going into work because you hate the business you’ve started up or, worse yet, eking out a living barely able to break even.

Well, get ready to celebrate, because I’m about to reveal the secret that will answer your question and having you sleeping like a baby at night..

And . . . relax! It won’t cost you a dime.

When I was first thinking about starting up my retirement business I spent several years evaluating business ideas such as investing, real estate, and Internet marketing, focused solely on whether the business was going to be profitable and make me money. But what I discovered after throwing myself into each of these business ventures was that while I did make some money, there was no satisfaction in the work I was doing. My retirement business had become just another personally unfulfilling job.

There was no heart.

I didn’t love my retirement business.

That’s when I started reading and talking with coaches that could help me find a better way to evaluate business ideas for my retirement business that were both emotionally satisfying and financially fulfilling.

During that journey I discovered the 3 most critical elements to retirement business success:

1. That first and foremost you must feel passionate about and love what you’re going to do.

2. The amount of income necessary to comfortably sustain you in your retirement.

3. The kind of lifestyle you really want to make you happy in your second life.

One free resource that helped me is from Barbara Sher’s book Wishcraft. The exercises in Chapter 3 helped me define these three elements. After working through the exercises I knew, without a doubt, what I really needed from my retirement business. And boy has that made all the difference!

So take a deep breath. I really want you to get this: Creating a retirement business as an expat teacher is not just about making money. While making money is important, it’s meaningless and empty if you aren’t passionate about and loving what you do.

Without knowing exactly what you need from your retirement business emotionally and financially you may find yourself wondering someday whether all the investment of time, money, and effort was worth it. Get clear about these three elements now, before you startup, so you’ll know what the best retirement business is for your financial and personal happiness.
